A Look at One of Us

Today I'd like to feature Deborah O'Toole or Sunnyplainquilting as we know her on Etsy and in our Team. She joined Etsy this summer and then became a part of our Team.

She is a Nurse specialized in critical care.  Her stress reliever is her sewing machine.  She loves working with fabric on or off the machine. Very detailed oriented, you've got to see her work. It's beautiful.

I love her quilts but her shop is not just limited to quilts. You can find fabric wreaths and even glass blocks decorated with fabric.  The quilt pictured is one of my favorites in her shop.  So....grab your coffee and go check her out. Here's the link to her shop:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/sunnyplainquilting

Art Chat

So today is my day to blog and I was scratching my head wondering what I should share today. Then it came to me. I have a link some of you might not be familiar with. It's called Art Chat - It was formerly the Chatty Teacher's site.  http://porcelainartist.proboards.com/

It started out as a porcelain art (china painting) discussion and ended up with all kinds of art information. It has photos for artists to reference. It
includes general art discussions with health and safety information, free lessons, information on watercolors, clay art, glass art, oils and acrylic. It's free to join.

It is a fun site. And if you are so inclined to want to learn our art of china painting, that would be the place to get the information.

Pictured here is a piece of my porcelain art. The apples are china painted on a porcelain plate. China paints are fired in a kiln and the paints go into the glaze so that means that they are permanent. They will never wear off and you can put them in the microwave and dishwasher.  It is available in my Etsy shop - JYWheeler

Here's the direct link to the item:

Out Smarting the Kitties

All of you "Cat People" can probably relate to my story.  I have 2 cats..LeeLu and Lily. I spend more money at the pet store buying things I just KNOW the girls will like.  My husband  says, "You waste your money. They won't like that."  I always want to prove him wrong.

My problem is I watch all those infomercials that make it look like your cat will love whatever the item is.This time I was sure that it would be different. So I go to the pet store and buy a self grooming cat brush (you know the one in an arch) and an emery scratching board (the one where the TV cat stretches and scratches and looks so happy).

I buy them, set them up-- No Interest.  I soak them in catnip--No interest.  OH, I thought I can outsmart those girls.  I pull out the laser pointer. They love to chase it around. I point it under the arch of the self grooming brush thinking they'd go under it brush themselves and see how good it feels..nope. They just ran around it.  I gave up.  Then I decide well maybe they need a demonstration of how to use the scratching board so I kneel down and demonstrate scratching the board.  They watched and looked very interested. Then Lily decided it was more fun to put her paw under the board, playing with a toy she swatted under there.

I give up...instead of outsmarting the kitties I think they have outsmarted me.

~~~The above ACEO Original Watercolor is available in my Etsy shop-Painted Panache by Joann Y Wheeler. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=40817607
What Medium Do You Like??
What your medium favorite???
You look around and there are so much art to pick from, it sometimes boggles the mind!
We have the most amazing artists in our DAWG Art team, and they are all so diverse!  From all ends of the art fields,  most artists like one type of medium to stick with.  Well that is a slightly different thing with me, I want to try new things all the time!  So I get bored with things very easily and therefore I like to move around, and yes I will come back to mediums now and again.  That probably makes it harder for me to sell items, but that is just my personality I guess.
Penquin Mermaid
 I have loved trying new crafts all my life!  It started when I was very young, so it isn't anything new with me!!  I started painted when I was about 12 with seascapes and landscapes.  I  thought I would share a few of my different mediums with you here and I would like to hear from you about your "favorite medium or mediums LOL".
All these items are on Sale on Etsy,  I love to do so many things I hope you enjoy them, Let me know what you like to do too!! :)
Joann Wheeler
I want to feature one of our artists. Her name is Joann Wheeler and she does alot of beautiful Porcelain painting, which totally intriques me.
Here's the interview with her,
1) Tell us about yourself.
My name is Joann Wheeler from Pasadena, Maryland. I love to paint and have been doing so since I was a child. I have taken classes from time to time at art shops, etc. but basically I'm pretty much self trained. I would describe myself as a porcelain and miniature artist.
2) What are your preferred mediums and art scale (miniature, large art, etc)?
My first love is porcelain art (china painting), however I also love to paint watercolors, pastel & colored pencil. I prefer miniature art (ACEO's). Since I am a prolific painter keeping it small doesn't cause me storage issues.
3) What are your inspirations?
I am inspired by God and nature. I love to paint flowers particularly and religious art.
4) Describe your art style.
My daughter describes it as realistic, but I don't think my paintings are realism. I personally dont think I have a particular style as some painters do. It depends on the mood I'm in as to how I paint.
5) Do you do anything other than painting?
I like to take recycled old jewelry and restructure it into one of a kind pieces. I wish I had more time for it because you can come up with some pretty interesting things. Periodically I will do some decorative painting on wood or glass.
6) Do you Blog, and what is your link?
I do blog. you can find my blog at http://jywheeler.blogspot.com
You can also find me on facebook
7) Where do you sell online?
http://jywheeler.etsy.com
http://bonanzle.com/electicspirit
http://www.artfire.com/users/ArtByJYWheeler
And sometimes I'm on Ebay
8) Are you opened to commission work?
Yes
9) What was your favorite piece of work?
I have so many pieces of work that I absolutely love. I couldn't choose just one.
10) Do you sell in a brick and mortar shop? If so, where?
No, just online and occasionally an art/craft show in the area.
I hope you enjoyed our interview with Joann Wheeler. Be sure to check out her shops and links.
I picked a few of my favorites of Joann's to show you. This cutting board is my absolute favorite, one side has this beautiful painting, and the other side is left unfinished so you can actually use it as a cutting board, functional art.
Tea
"The tea party is a spa for the soul.
You leave your cares and work behind.
Busy people forget their business.
Your stress melts away, your senses awaken . . ."
Alexandra Stoddard
Having a tea party? Are you a tea drinker? I am. Nothing better than brewing tea from loose tea. I like to experiment mixing a little of this and a little of that. How about you?
This tea trivet is available in my Etsy shop. It's handpainted kiln fired porcelain. Dishwasher safe. Here's the link: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=26449720
Father's Day is coming....
I was thinking the other day. I am so darn lucky to have my father. He's 82 years young. He's been such an important part of my life. I am truly a Daddy's girl. What do I like about my Dad? He was always a very good provider for our family. He insisted my Mom never work so he had it all on his shoulders.
He always showed us lots of love. He would take us fishing and call it bonding. When we were kids, we weren't always happy to go at the crack of dawn to get the fish (cause fish like to get up early). But now I look back at those times with fondness. Especially when we would go to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and dip for crabs and seine for fish and then cook some of them right on the beach as we spent the day there. What memories!
Speaking of memories. How Dad loves to dance. My daughter says he looks like he's stomping bugs but I love to watch him and Mom do their version of jitterbug. So what wonderful memories do you have of your Dad...
The dresser box is faux leather painted on porcelain available in my Etsy shop (JYWheeler)
