Garden Girl......

...where did this garden girl go?  Well I made a mad dash to the house. You can tell it was me because I left the hat behind! LOL  I have been trying to work on my spring planting but every time I do, it rains. What's with that? 

I know we need rain for the plants to grow but I'll never have plants planted at this rate.  I did manage to get a few bigonias and salvia in. Oh and my tomatos, pepper, cucumber & strawberries but there are pots with Peonies and fox glove waiting for the next sunny day.

So RAIN RAIN GO AWAY....so Joann can plant her stuff today!

Crafters in the Closet

So many of us have way more supplies than room to store them. Creative storage solutions are a multimillion dollar business. There are specialty stores, aisles at your local stores and magazines devoted to helping us get all that excess into neat and tidy bins.

My latest wish list includes this bin for $33. A real bargain when you see what it holds! There is even a place for your sketch books! If you are like most artists you can't stop at one medium, one style, or one sketch pad...so this is a great way to keep you organized.

Pencils, watercolors, acrylics, even oils all have a place and dividers to keep you straight. If you are tighter budgeted than medicare you may have to pass on this gem, but don't let that stop you.

I live in a small apartment with a dog, cat, toddler son, baby girl, and a husband. Needless to say there is little Mom space to be found. I found a simple enough place. The closet. It is packed full with a folding easel complete with carry case, plastic totes for each medium, and charming little handmade tags.

It is not as fancy as this box, but it serves it's purpose. Browse your local stores and find what works for you. If you are still drooling over the super satchel model pictured, then click here and add it to your craft closet.

I Have a Romance with ACEOs

I have been on a romance kick lately showing romance through photography at my personal blog. Now, all of my photography prints are available as ACEOs.

Let me back track a little. I started out doing ACEOs as a mixed media artist primarily and then expanded into doing some painting, but I feel I have finally found my niche with photography. It just gradually took a hold of me and that was it. So now my main focus is photography and when I buy photography it is always an ACEO.

I am an avid collector. I own between 150 and 200 ACEOs at the moment. I think one of the biggest draws for me is that they are so easy to collect and do not require a lot of wall space. In addition, there are so many ways to display them.

Albums (all shapes and sizes)
Miniature plate holders (to sit them around on tables in groups)
Magnetic frames for the fridge and for metallic bulletin boards
Hangers for knobs on furniture and even walls
An ACEO tree...what is that you ask? Find a branch outside and bring it indoors and fill it with ACEOs.

One of the things I love to do with my ACEOs is to buy seasonal ones. I decorate my house with them for the appropriate season. I just put away my Halloween ones and out come my Thanksgiving ones, then Christmas, then Valentine’s, then July 4th and so on. It is much easier than hanging out seasonal flags or changing clothes on a goose sitting on the front porch. LOL

And, I will always collect my cat ACEOs. I am cat lover from way back. Another favorite thing for me to collect are animals in general and flowers. :)

I love earrings too, but that is another story and another collection....LOL

Fabric painting

Fabric painting instructions

When I start any fabric painting I usually sketch out my outline on paper with a transfer pencil
that way I can erase if I need to without ruining the fabric.

Next step is to transfer this outline onto the fabric using an iron. With this image I chose to use a light colored fabric so that you can see what is being done easier. When using a darker fabric it is a good idea to just start your painting right out on the fabric, Because the transfer pencil does not show up very dark, I was going to show you a picture of the outline transfered onto the fabric but it is so light I cant get a good picture so I will just show you the start of the painting.

When painting on fabric I use Cameo fabric paint it is a great fabric paint it becomes part of the fabric it will not chip crack or peel off the fabric you can wash as you would normally wash the fabric.
Ok Next step is to place a board or something hard between the fabric so that I am only painting on the front of the shirt. If you do not put something between the paint will go all the way through and you will have an interesting design on the back of the shirt as well as the front. My board has a fine sand paper attached to it so that the fabric doesnt move while I am painting.

Ok now for the fun part the painting. I always start on the left side of the painting so that I dont rest my hand on my artwork and mess it up. I started painting the back of this cat with a dark color and then went back and blended in the white to show the parts in the hair.

Now I start with the white on the bottom of the cat the legs and this is where I use the blending tool blending with fabric paint is much like blending with acrylic as the paint drys very fast so you have to work quick and in small sections. I start with the dark color in small sections and then put in the wite and blend and keep going until I get the whole section blended and then if you need to go back later to make adjustments you can just add more wet paint. Then I continue to the right side and end with the head. The face is the most important part of this painting because as with painting any portrait if the face isnt right then you might as well pack it up.
I started with the ears again blending the dark color with the light in small sections always blending in the direction of the growth of hair.
Then I work on the eyes blending again the color in the eye and I do not put the highlight in the eye until after I paint the rest of the face as I want the eye to be completely dry before putting it in so it doesnt blend in with the rest of the eye. Then I paint the nose I always start with the shadow first and blend the medium and the highlight always last. then I put the highlight in the eye.
Now I just do some final touches adding highlights and shadows here and there and its done. And this painting will stay on this shirt for as long as the shirt lasts. The shirt you see here was given as a gift to a friend.

Ice Storms

Snow and ice cover almost everything...it is so cold that the animals are all hidden away. The scene is set for lots of cuddling and bundling in front of a nice fire with a great book, or my favorite, a new sketch pad!

There are lots of inspirations on wintry days and nights. One only has to look at the etchings on the window panes to start seeing patterns dancing across the surface. The trees hold onto their charm year round by playing Mother Nature's canvas. On this coldest of winter days the trees seem to turn gray in preparation for the frosty coating that will no doubt be in place come morning.

So get those sketch pads out ladies and start rendering nature in her frozen stillness and ignore the numbness in your fingers! Be inspired anew by the bitter cold to paint a scene of perfect suspension and resist the urge to complain.

Yes, it is frightfully cold. But even ice has it's beauty. And if those lights go off, use that as the trigger to try something new.

When you are creating by candle light, hopefully by choice, try a new medium...wax. It has been used to grace envelopes for centuries, but it is beautiful on it's own as well.

Buy a cheap pack of crayons and a lighter. Get a blank art card or any size you like and start melting the crayons in patterns or designs all over the surface. Use old paper clips and rubber stamps to add texture or words before it hardens.

Let your creativity soar and feel the heat as the weather lets loose with it's worse. i hope you are inspired and show off what you have discovered!

Since it's fall, I will feature one of my favorite pieces. It is 4 1/2 x 4 inches x 1/2 inches high. A porcelain box painted to look like faux leather.

This primitive design consists of 2 oak leaves and 3 acorns. Nice dresser box for rings, pins, change, whatever.

Each piece of handpainted porcelain is a piece of art to treasure. Time has been taken to carefully design this piece. It has been handpainted and fired many times in a kiln to an approximate temperature of 1400 degrees to obtain the beautiful finished product. Photography has been my one true love that has never been tiring for me. Good Morning - September 17, 2008

Good morning. I have been thinking about what I'd like to say today all week. I keep coming back to "change". I have been thinking of my life and all of the events that I have seen, some good and some horrible, like 911. I have walked down many roads that have had lots of curves and detours but the one constant, apart from my faith, has been art.

During my 58 years, as far back as I can remember, art has had a part in my life. I remember as a child my aunt gathering us kids together to make christmas bells from paper cups, tin foil (and it was tin foil back then) wire and jingle bells. She always had some sort of project for us. I always had crayons. My sisters and I would sit and draw and color for hours. One of the things we loved to do was make floor plans of witches houses, complete with furniture placement, spiders in the corners and bugs on the walls. I made my own paper dolls and their clothes. We had never heard of video games so we made our own game boards and pieces.

I am very happy that I grew up in an age where we were able and encouraged to use our imaginations. I have done a lot of different crafts, and used lots of mediums in my art over the years, but it has always been part of my life. Some of the things I have enjoyed the most are making porcelain dolls, and creating these tiny pieces of art known as ACEO's. Recently I learned how to needle felt, which I enjoy very much. I love the feel of the wool fiber in my hand - it is so soft, and how you can use a single little needle and turn it into a solid piece of felt and create an ACEO, a purse, a scarf - the possibilities are endless. The pictures below are two of the ACEO's I have created for halloween using this medium:
