Barbara Mathews - Featured Artist

I Would like to introduce to you a very talented artist named Barbara Mathews. Barbara is a member of our DAWG Team, and her talents lie in many directions. I am amazed by the beauty of her work.

Here's a little about her direct from her bio:
"I am a senior citizen who loves to paint. I have raised 4 children. I Have been sewing for over 55 yrs. I have owned and operated a clothing and lingerie shop in the past.
I have owned and operated a ceramic and porcelain doll shop

I have dabbled in almost ever craft there is out there but like Mother like Daughter. My Mother was a wonderful seamstress. I do not hold a candle to her but am well on my way to doing this since I have been sewing since I was a teenager and I am now over 70 years old. You say that is too old to be doing this-Well maybe so but I enjoy it and like to keep busy doing something,

I have been sewing for over 55 years so have plenty of experience"

PLEASE VISIT BARB AT:
Barb's Gallery of Art Etsy Shop

I hope you've enjoyed learning a little about Barbara Mathews as much as I've enjoyed telling you about her.
Until next time,
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

A Look at One of Us

Today I'd like to feature Deborah O'Toole or Sunnyplainquilting as we know her on Etsy and in our Team. She joined Etsy this summer and then became a part of our Team.

She is a Nurse specialized in critical care.  Her stress reliever is her sewing machine.  She loves working with fabric on or off the machine. Very detailed oriented, you've got to see her work. It's beautiful.

I love her quilts but her shop is not just limited to quilts. You can find fabric wreaths and even glass blocks decorated with fabric.  The quilt pictured is one of my favorites in her shop.  So....grab your coffee and go check her out. Here's the link to her shop:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/sunnyplainquilting

Blushing Delight

This is one of my latest paintings called Blushing Delight. I painted it in October and finally got around to taking a photo of it to get it ready for the web.
My daughter and I went to a flower garden this summer to take pictures, and this baby was there, looking irresistable. It is my favorite colored rose.
The original painting can be purchased through my Etsy Shop.
I will be creating products in my Zazzle Shop tonight. Just look under the Flowers catagory.
Last night I went to Michaels to purchase more Prismacolor colored pencils. I bought ten. When I came home with my new pencils it was like Christmas! That seemed to unlock the funk I was in with painting. I am so excited to start a new painting!

Painter's Block?

Do you ever get painter's block? I sure do. Sometimes I can go for hours without an idea. Or worse yet I'll work on several pieces of art and since I'm not inspired they turn out terrible and end up in the trash can.

So in one of my art block moments I was looking for ideas online and found some interesting ideas that I'll share with you. I found them at Suite101: 14 Creative Ideas for Creating Art: Two Weeks of Painting Exercises

The  site suggests going on nature walks, picking up pebbles and painting them. I was thinking with all these trees dropping their leaves it might even be fun to do one of just leaves. And another suggestion, looking out your window and paint whatever is there. I have done that on occasion but you can only have so many paintings of your backyard LOL!

Another tip was to  look through your frig for some pieces of fruit or vegetatbles or to paint just blades of grass.  I was thinking well even anything just close up could make a good piece of art. One time I just painted a zoomed it, closeup of two Christmas ornaments. It is pictured to the left.
Now if you like the steam punk kind of thing this idea might speak to you (but not to me). The idea was to take a natural element and paint it as if it were made from a man-made material. Like painting a flower as if it was made of metal. That just sounds strange to me but I'm sure there are people it would appeal to.

The webpage also talked about ideas for painting humans. Like painting a human form no bigger than 2” tall. Well we ACEO artists know all about 2.5 inch sized subjects! LOL

One idea that I thought might be fun to try one of these days was to paint  a human form by painting only negative space or painting just half a face, filling the whole canvas with the subject. It kind of reminds me of some of those profile photos on Facebook.

Well hopefully these ideas will help stimulate your creativity. It did mine!

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

I've been under the weather lately with bronchitis, so I haven't been up to doing much art. But last weekend I was cuddled up on the recliner under a blanket, with a sketchbook, a pad of watercolor paper and my watercolor pencils.
I first tried painting the wolf in pink since it's Breast Cancer Awareness month...but I didn't like how it was turning out. I had done a Pink Tiger aceo a few years ago that I just love, but a pink wolf was not a go.
This is what I then came up with. I call it Wolf At Rest, and am thinking of using it for my Christmas cards this year. The reference photo was taken a few years back at a wolf sanctuary in Forest Lake, MN. I do have to admit that I really like how it turned out, and I already created products with this image at my Zazzle Shop.

Coming soon is a beautiful pink and yellow rose painting that I did before I got sick, but it still needs some finishing touches. I will post it when I get it finished.
I hope you are well.
Blessings to you all,

hugs,
Brenda

Art Chat

So today is my day to blog and I was scratching my head wondering what I should share today. Then it came to me. I have a link some of you might not be familiar with. It's called Art Chat - It was formerly the Chatty Teacher's site.  http://porcelainartist.proboards.com/

It started out as a porcelain art (china painting) discussion and ended up with all kinds of art information. It has photos for artists to reference. It
includes general art discussions with health and safety information, free lessons, information on watercolors, clay art, glass art, oils and acrylic. It's free to join.

It is a fun site. And if you are so inclined to want to learn our art of china painting, that would be the place to get the information.

Pictured here is a piece of my porcelain art. The apples are china painted on a porcelain plate. China paints are fired in a kiln and the paints go into the glaze so that means that they are permanent. They will never wear off and you can put them in the microwave and dishwasher.  It is available in my Etsy shop - JYWheeler

Here's the direct link to the item:

Fun with paint...

I had so much fun working with Daniel Smith duochrome paint that I had to do more.
The background is cactus flower and the bamboo in the background is desert bronze and saquaro green.
At one angle it appears bronze or gold, at another angle shades of green are visible.
The top layer of bamboo is sap green.
I haven't been able to capture the different colors in a photo, yet!

Lisa's Crocheted Dish Cloth - Scrubbers

Our wonderful Lisa Parker had a free blog giveaway back a while ago. The giveaway was a crocheted dishcloth scrubber, and I was the lucky winner. Since then I have happily used my pretty blue dishcloth a few times now, and it is holding up great and does a great job cleaning. Here you see me scrubbing a fry pan that I had made turkey bacon in. I am very happy with the quality and job it does.

They are made from echo-friendly 100% cotton yarn. They feel and work great, and launder up beautifully too! I do believe it will last longer than my regular store bought dish clothes, and I plan on replacing my old ones with these new ones.
I strongly recommend Lisa's crocheted Dish Clothes and encourage you stop by her etsy shop.
Be sure to check out Lisa's Blog, she has wonderful giveaways twice a month, and she is really on the ball and posts often.
